TONY CRAGG – Against the Grain
10 June to 30 September 2012

The British sculptor Anthony Cragg (*1949) is one of the major artists of our time – his output is many-layered, surprising and unmistakeable.

Tony Cragg has been pushing the boundaries of sculptural work with remarkable consistency since the 1970s. He draws his creative energy from a wide variety of sources and interweaves both artistic and scientific interests. Cragg elicits new forms and qualities from familiar materials such as plastic, bronze or wood. His complex works unite mathematical precision, lively elegance, expressive dynamism and playful lightness.

His pioneering work has been honoured with the most prestigious art awards; exhibitions of his sculptures are internationally noted events. Because Cragg’s work has not yet been seen in Hamburg, in Summer 2012 the Ernst Barlach Haus will be the venue of a premiere: a presentation conceived by the artist himself will enable viewers to experience a concentration of Tony Cragg’s works similar to the Waldfrieden sculpture garden he opened in 2008 in his adopted home of Wuppertal.
