Hanseatic art with a French touch
The young painter Franz Nölken had already been a member of the Hamburgischer Künstlerclub and the Brücke group for a short time when in 1909 he decided to go to Paris and become a student of Henri Matisse.
In the following years he received decisive stimuli from the culture of French painting – Degas, Matisse and the Fauves, but primarily Paul Cézanne. Paris in Mind pays particular homage to Nölken’s sensitively composed paintings from the 1910s. The exhibition will be opened on 4 November 2018 – a hundred years to the day after Nölken fell in France on one of the last battlefields of the First World War. Exhibition
