A southern European avant-gardist to discover

The Ernst Barlach Haus presents a pioneer of modern Portuguese painting: Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso (1887–1918). Celebrated in his home country, he has been little recognised until now outside Portugal, although during his lifetime he was much admired by artists, critics and collectors in Europe and America.

With around 70 paintings and drawings, the Ernst Barlach Haus provides an opportunity to discover the many facets of Souza-Cardoso’s work for the first time in Germany.

The loans come from the collection of the prestigious Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian – Centro de Arte Moderna in Lisbon, where Cardoso’s work has recently been catalogued
